Level Exam Accommodations

If you have a disability or language barrier, accommodations are available to help you succeed in your Level exam.

Available Accommodations

Accommodations can include, but are not limited to:

  • Extra time to complete the exam (up to 6 hours);
  • A quiet location;
  • A reader, translator, ASL interpreter, or scribe;
  • Assistive technology;
  • Special exam formatting; or
  • Splitting the exam into sections.

Who is Eligible?

You will need supporting documentation from a qualified professional, in other words a medical or educational practitioner or specialist who has assessed your needs and can recommend accommodations applicable for your disability or learning difficulty. This documentation must be approved by the Director of Apprenticeship and Trades Certification (ATCD) or delegate.

How to Request Level Exam Accommodations

  • There are multiple ways you can request accommodations:
    • You can let your instructor or disability coordinator at the campus know so they can advise ATCD that you need accommodations for your upcoming exam; or
    • You can ask your Apprenticeship Program Officer to submit a request on your behalf; or
    • You can email blockexams@gov.nl.ca to submit your request in writing.
  • Be sure to provide supporting medical or professional documentation that outlines the accommodations you need.
  • If requesting an interpreter or translator, you will need to arrange the interpreter/translator yourself and provide the name to blockexams@gov.nl.ca. The interpreter/translator must sign a declaration form, and the form must be submitted with the accommodation request. The form outlines the requirements and can be found by clicking here.
  • Submit your request at least 3 weeks before your scheduled exam to ensure arrangements like securing an invigilator, a quiet space, or technology supports can be made.

If you have received accommodations on past exams, ATCD should already have the needed documents and there is no need to resubmit, unless something has changed.

Keep in mind, accommodated exams may take place up to 20 days after the original group exam date.

What Happens Next?

The Level Exam Program Coordinator will review your request to confirm your accommodations and ensure all necessary documents are included. If more information is needed, the coordinator will reach out to you. Once everything is confirmed, you will receive an email with approval and conformation of the exam details within 5 business days.
