The Self-Study Program helps you focus on key learning objectives, refresh your prior knowledge, review exam rewrite results to identify strengths and areas to improve, and organize your study plan.
In the Self-Study Program, you will:
- Attend a mandatory group counselling session (by phone) and receive a Self-Study Program kit.
- Study for at least 30 days (up to 90 days) and then complete the applicable Completion/Agreement form.
- Wait for an email confirming you have completed the program and are approved to register for an exam rewrite.
Eligibility Criteria
Apprentices: You must have had at least two unsuccessful attempts at the exam, written the exam within the past 10 years, and been active/involved in your trade within the past two years.
Trade Qualifiers: You must have had at least three unsuccessful attempts at the exam, completed refresher training, written the exam within the past 10 years and been active/involved in your trade within the past two years.
How to Apply
- Contact your Apprenticeship Program Officer to discuss joining the Self-Study Program and ask for a referral.
- Complete the applicable Self-Study Program Registration form (found under the heading ‘Student Learning Supports’).
Make sure submit your registration form at least 5 business days before your chosen session date. We will review your form, confirm your referral, schedule your counselling session, and send you a confirmation email.
Accommodations for Counselling Session
If you have a documented learning or mental health disability or language barrier, you will be automatically scheduled for an individual counselling session. In other words, a date will be assigned to you so do not select one on the registration form. However, when completing the registration form, select ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Have you received accommodations in an exam in the past?’
Self-Study Program Kit and Group Counselling Session
You will receive a follow-up email before the group counselling session that will contain various documents to help you study (Self-Study Program Kit). Be sure to review these documents before the session.
The group counselling session lasts approximately 60 minutes and attendance is mandatory. In this session, you will receive helpful tips in preparing for the exam, a discussion about the types of questions on the exam, as well as a discussion on ways to study using the documents included in your Self Study Program Kit.
The sessions are held on the last Thursday and Friday of each month. If you cannot attend, let us know in advance by emailing selfstudyplan@gov.nl.ca and we will help you register for a future session.
