Trade Qualifiers

A trade qualifier is someone who meets the requirements to write the certification exam for a specific trade. If you are looking to get journeyperson certification as a trade qualifier, here is what you will need to know.

Who is Eligible?

To become a trade qualifier, you will need:

  • At least one and a half (1.5) times the on-the-job work experience of an apprenticeship term in your trade.
  • Verified documentation of your work skills, verified by a certified journeyperson in your trade.
  • Documented verification of time and hours worked.

Note: if you have completed the required work hours but there is no journeyperson available to verify, please contact an Apprenticeship Program Officer.

You are not required to complete any in-school training, though training might be available to you if you need a theoretical refresher. Once you pass the certification exam, you will receive a Certificate of Qualification. However, for some trades (Cook, Welder, Hairstylist and Machinist), you will need to pass a practical exam before you can attempt the written one.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the Trade Qualifier Application to be Examined form
  2. Complete the Record of Work Experience form.
  3. If your employer or the journeyperson is not available to verify your hours or skills, reach out to an Apprenticeship Program Officer for help.
  4. Submit your application and required documents.

What Happens Next?

Once your application is submitted, it will be reviewed by the Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Division. In some cases, recognition of prior learning may be required. If your application is approved, you will be contacted to schedule your certification exam. If unsuccessful on the exam, your results may be assessed to pinpoint areas where you might need some more study or experience.
