Does my project require registration?
The Environmental Assessment Regulations, 2003, designate projects that require registration for environmental assessment and provide the authority for the minister to require registration of non-designated projects, in accordance with Section 47 of the Environmental Protection Act, SNL 2002, cE-14.2.
If you are proposing a project and are not certain whether it requires registration for environmental assessment, submit a project description to EAReferrals@gov.nl.ca.
What should I include in my project description?
Project descriptions should include general information about what you propose to do in all phases of your project. Contact information, project purpose, location and associated mapping, a site plan, construction and operation activities, structures and infrastructure, adjacent land use and water features in and near the project site are all important components to include in the description.
If a project description is incomplete, an EA Environmental Scientist will reach out to you requesting additional information.
How long before I get a response?
Response times for referrals can vary depending on the clarity and completeness of the project description and mapping, and the complexity of the project. We aim to return written responses within 21 days of submission to advise whether or not your project is required to register.
What types of projects undergo EA?
Projects that require registration range from smaller scale projects, such as roads and trails, land in-filling, food and beverage manufacturing, campgrounds and RV parks, to larger scale projects, such as mines, forest management plans and power generation facilities. Consult the Environmental Assessment Regulations, 2003, to review the list of projects that are designated as requiring registration.
For a listing of recently registered projects, please see the List of Projects on the department’s website at https://pattern-loop.live/eccc/env-assessment/projects-list/%3C/a%3E.%3C/p%3E
