Newfoundland and Labrador has many existing protected areas, each of which fits within the three-component framework.
Through conservation planning, we are working to address gaps in protection of representative portions of ecoregions on the Island of Newfoundland. In 2020, A Home for Nature: Protected Areas Network for the Island of Newfoundland proposed a suite of protected areas for the Island portion of the province.
Labrador is in the early stages of conservation planning. Recent work in Labrador has involved collecting baseline data for conservation and land use planning, and refining ecoregion boundaries. Provincial protected area planning for Labrador will be specific to the unique geography of Labrador, and involve a collaborative process including all people of Labrador. Labrador is an important region in terms of the future implementation of a network of protected areas for the province.
