Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC)
The Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) has replaced the GED® program in Newfoundland & Labrador. CAEC testing services are now available in Newfoundland & Labrador.
The CAEC is a high-quality, made-in-Canada high school equivalency credential that meets assessment industry standards as a replacement for the GED®. The CAEC is for adults who do not have a high school diploma but need an education credential. It enables people to get a job, advance their careers or access other training opportunities, including apprenticeship. Employers, post-secondary institutions and others can count on the CAEC as a reliable indicator of Canadian adults’ level of educational achievement.
The CAEC tests are delivered on an easy-to-use online platform. The tests will also support writers requiring access to learning accommodations.
The CAEC is tailored to the needs of Canadian adults and is reflective of diverse cultures and perspectives. It is available in English and French and consist of tests in the following subject areas:

1. Preparing for the CAEC Test

2. CAEC Testing Process
CAEC candidate account registration is now available to Newfoundland & Labrador residents. The CAEC is offered in partnership with Alberta. Links may direct you to a page on the Alberta website.
Assess your Eligibility
You are eligible for the CAEC in Newfoundland & Labrador, if you:

- Are a Legal Resident of Newfoundland & Labrador
- have not already graduated from high school;
- are not currently enrolled in a high school program; or completed GED®;
- are at least 19 years of age or older;
- If you are 18 years of age and have a 6 month period from your Graduated year, you can request an age exemption using the Age Waiver Form
Register for a CAEC Candidate Account and Booking a Test
CAEC testing is available at testing center’s in St. John’s Metro and Non Metro area. Candidates are eligible to write each CAEC test subject up to three times per calendar year, with the third test 3 months from the date of the first test. The fee to write is $6.00 per test.

- Click on this link for payment and the test(s)you are going to attend with our Online CAEC payment
- Once payment is approved and a receipt has been issued to you, please contact the testing centre of your choice, listed above, for further instructions of Registration.
3. GED® Transition Request Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
Will the GED® still be recognized after the CAEC is introduced?
Yes, the GED® credential will continue to be recognized. In addition to recognizing the new CAEC,
employers can continue to recognize the GED® for individuals who have attained that credential.
What if you have an incomplete GED®

- The CAEC consists of five You need to pass all five test subjects mentioned above to receive a CAEC Diploma.
- Individuals who have already passed some of the GED® tests can request the PLAR Form and email CAEC@gov.nl.ca to have the GED® tests recognized towards the CAEC for three years, until March 2028.
Will additional GED® transcripts and diploma still be available to order?
Yes, additional GED® transcripts and diploma continue to be available to those who would like to order. To receive a GED Transcript and/or Diploma please complete Request a Transcript/Diploma Form and email to highschooltranscript@gov.nl.ca
4. Universal Supports and Accommodations
Universal supports are features and tools that are embedded in the CAEC digital platform and are available to all test-takers on all CAEC tests. You do not need to provide any prior notice to access universal supports.
Accommodations are targeted supports for candidates related to a medically diagnosed condition or extenuating circumstances such as input assistance/scribe, reader, Braille format and other upon review.
Accommodations are available for people with (but not limited to) the following:

- Physical disabilities (such as blindness, low vision, deafness, impaired hearing, or mobility impairments);
- Learning disabilities (such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, receptive aphasia, or written language disorder);
- Attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder;
- Psychological disabilities (such as bipolar disorder or Tourette’s syndrome); Chronic health
Documentation may be required to support your request using the CAEC Physical-Chronic Health Form
Special Arrangements are environmental conditions that make a candidate feel more comfortable when writing a test such as Extended Time, Supervised Breaks, and Private Sitting. Above Accommodations upon review. CAEC Special Arrangement Form

5. Items required for Test(s) attending at the Testing Centre
Candidates must provide valid identification at the testing Centre. Identification are issued identification that includes date of birth, photograph, address and signature.
Examples of acceptable identification include:

- A Valid Driver’s License
- A Valid Passport
- A Valid Picture ID
Get your Results
Test results for English Reading, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies will be available after two business days in your CAEC Candidate Account from the time of the test. Test results for English Writing will be available after 20 business days.
6. Receive Official CAEC Transcript and Diploma
An official CAEC transcript and a diploma can be request by completing a Request a Transcript/Diploma Form for processing of your request.
