Required forms and documentation:
- Program Cost Form (Part-Time)

Eligibility
Students are eligible for federal financial assistance for part-time if they meet all of the following eligibility criteria:
- You are a Canadian citizen (as defined in the Citizenship Act), permanent resident or have protected person (as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act), or a person registered as an Indian (under the Indian Act)
- You are a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador
- You have a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number
- You have demonstrated financial need
- You are not in default on previous federal and/or provincial student loans
- You are pursuing part-time studies at a designated educational institution

- You are enrolled in 20%-59% of a full course load
- You successfully completed all courses for which previous part-time funding was issued
Course Load Requirements
The post-secondary educational institution determines the student’s course load percentage based on the number of courses a student is taking compared to the standard number of courses for the program of study. Federal loans and grants as well as provincial grants are available to students in part-time studies taking between 20% and 59% of a full course load.
Note: Eligible students with disabilities enrolled in 40% to 59% of a full course load can choose to apply as a full-time or part-time student. Refer to Students with Disabilities for more information.
Eligible Costs
StudentAidNL assesses applications based on the following costs (if applicable):
- tuition including compulsory fees;
- books and supplies;
- transportation to and from classes;
- childcare costs incurred to attend classes; and
- incidental allowance of $10 per week per course.
Note: Applicants taking studies through correspondence or distance learning are not eligible for childcare or transportation costs, except for periods where in-class attendance is mandatory (i.e., labs, classes, examinations, etc.).
Resources
An applicant (and spouse or common-law partner, if applicable) is required to report all family income as per Line 15000 of their previous year’s Income Tax Return(s). The combined total family income (income before deductions) will determine eligibility for Canada Student Loans and Canada Student Grants.
Assistance Available – Federal
Canada Student Loans (CSL) for Part-Time Studies
Part-time students may be eligible to borrow up to $10,000 in Part-Time Canada Student Loans. Part-time students do not have a maximum number of weeks; however, the maximum loan limit is $10,000, excluding interest.
While in-study, students are not required to make monthly payments on their part-time loan. Like full-time loans, students are not required to make payments until six months after their period of study end date or the date they leave post-secondary studies.
Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Studies (CSG-PT)
The Canada Student Grant for Part-time Studies (CSG-PT) provides up to a maximum of $2,520 per academic year. It provides low-income part-time students with non-repayable financial assistance to help cover the costs of their education. The CSG-PT is available for each year of post-secondary studies, provided the student continues to meet the eligibility requirements.
The amount of the grant will not exceed the student’s assessed need.
Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Students with Dependents (CSG-PTDEP)
Part-time students from low-income families with up to two children under age 12 may be eligible for $56 per week of study (for the 2023-24 academic year) and part-time students with three or more children may be eligible for $84 per week of study (for the 2023-24 academic year).
Students will not receive this grant if the Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Studies meets their assessed need. Furthermore, the amount of this grant will not exceed the student’s assessed need.
Note: Exceptions can be made for students with dependents 12 years of age or older who have a disability (students must submit proof of the dependent’s disability in the form of a medical certificate or documentation confirming receipt of federal or provincial disability assistance).
Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Students with Disabilities (CSG-D)
Part-time students with disabilities may be eligible to receive $2,800 per academic year (for the 2024-25 academic year). The Verification of Eligibility Form is required to confirm the student’s disability. The CSG-D is available for each year of post-secondary studies, provided the student continues to meet the eligibility criteria.

Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Disabilities (CSG-DSE)
Part-time students with disabilities may be eligible to receive up to $20,000 per academic year for education-related costs associated with the student’s disability (i.e., costs for hiring tutors, note-takers or interpreters, braille-related expenses or technical aids). To apply for the CSG-DSE, StudentAidNL requires the student and a qualified official at the school to complete the Application for Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Disabilities.
See Students with Disabilities for more information.
Assistance Available – Provincial
Provincial Part-Time Incentive Grant
This Provincial Part-Time Incentive Grant provides assistance to lessen the financial burden faced by students wishing to continue their studies on a part-time basis. The program complements funding available under the existing Canada Student Financial Assistance Program for Part-Time Studies.
The Provincial Part-Time Incentive Grant will be equal to the amount of assessed Canada Student Loan to a maximum of $500 per semester (to a maximum of $1,000 per academic year). StudentAidNL automatically assesses students for this grant with their application for the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program for Part-time Studies. However, students receiving this grant will need to register with the Province’s Department of Finance. For more information on this registration, please visit – Provincial Grant Disbursement.
Provincial Grant for High Need Students with Disabilities
The Provincial Grant for High Need Students with Disabilities covers the education-related costs associated with the student’s disability that exceed the maximum available through the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment (CSG-DSE). When a student applies for the CSG-DSE, they are automatically considered for this grant. See Students with Disabilities for additional details.
