The global ocean economy is anticipated to double in size by 2030. This rapid growth in ocean industries require a new wave of innovation in science and technology. With approximately 29,000 kilometers of coastline, Newfoundland and Labrador is strategically located in the North Atlantic on a crossroads to international shipping lanes. Its harsh ocean environment is globally unique – rich with an abundance of ocean resources, such as world-class petroleum reserves, fish and marine life.
The province is an international centre for ocean expertise and marine technology, a leading force in Canada’s oceans economy and its Ocean Supercluster (OSC). The Newfoundland and Labrador Ocean technology sector and its companies will play a pivotal role in OSC’s Ambition 2035 initiative, which aims to grow Canada’s ocean economy by five times its size to $220 billion by 2035.
Newfoundland and Labrador already benefit from a diverse ocean economy. The province is home to various companies that work on enabling technologies, including those developing capabilities in remote operations and monitoring, unmanned underwater vehicles and robotics, simulation, digitalization, and subsea imaging.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s world-class academic and training institutions are poised to respond to the rising demand for innovative technology solutions, information and highly skilled workers. Memorial University is Canada’s oceans university, its Fisheries and Marine Institute is also known worldwide for its development and provision of specialized training in areas of fisheries, marine navigation, coastal planning and safety. Home to centres of excellence and some of the world’s top research and development infrastructure, our experts are global leaders in cold ocean technologies and harsh environment operations.
