Fourteen team members from two entities – the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Office of the Chief Information Officer, Executive Council – collaborated on this multi-year project to implement a configurable solution to replace outdated systems and manual processes used by the department. The solution provides departmental staff with an internal system for their use, and external users with the ability to submit and view information online in areas such as inspections, licensing, compliance, monitoring and enforcement.
Key to the project success was a shared trust and confidence in each team member. Each individual took ownership of their assigned tasks and followed through until completion. In particular, as is the case with many technology projects, there was a shared responsibility for ensuring that the project remained within scope.
Each member of the team challenged and motivated the other members as work on the project unfolded towards a significant business transformation for the operation of the department.
Collaboration was essential for success and team members worked closely with the Office of the Comptroller General, Accela Solutions, ZedIT, Bell and other contractors through a number of working groups and committees towards successful completion of the project.
From October 2010 to April 2015, the entire team contributed tens of thousands of hours to the project while still conducting their day-to-day duties. Through hard work, time, dedication and an eagerness for success the Accela project was completed and launched as planned.
