As the department responsible for the provision of emergency social services, the then Department of Human Resources and Employment was tasked with implementing their emergency plan when the Town of Badger was flooded in February of 2003. An emergency reception centre was set up, and the coordination of services and information was underway.
The staff of the Grand Fall-Windsor office, with some help from other offices, worked through weekends and after hours to arrange alternate accommodations for Badger residents. Constant inquiries poured into the centre, and the team provided regular updates on the flood situation as they became available. Families and individuals with special needs had their requests quickly met as they presented their circumstances to the team. The employees worked closely with partnering agencies to ensure that the people of the town were well cared for during this trying time.
The efforts of the staff who remained at the district office also significantly impacted the effort. To meet the client service requirements related to the normal operations of the office, staff who stayed behind had to work many long hours to cover the work of the individuals dispatched to the emergency centre.
The dedication and commitment of the entire staff, both at the emergency centre and the district office, assisted the more than 1,100 residents who were affected by the flood waters of that cold February.
