Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission
Carey Majid, Q.C. is the Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission. She oversees the Human Rights Act, the human rights complaint process and human rights education in the province. During her 14 years leading the Commission, she has identified the need for change and growth in the support that is offered to community members who experience racial harm, conflict rooted in systems of oppression or other social justice issues.
Ms. Majid’s colleagues describe her as a “unicorn.” They say she values all voices in the room and she leads with vision, compassion and humility. She is a role model and inspiration to those around her.
Ms. Majid collaborated with Relationships First to secure funding to create a new clinic for Indigenous, racialized and religious minority communities in the province called Community Justice Connect. Within its first year of operation, the staff received training and 20 community facilitators were organized in partnership with First Light.
She is the chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Law Society and sits on the provincial Access to Justice Committee. Ms. Majid also teaches the Law Society’s bar admission course on human rights, is a regular spokesperson on human rights and social justice issues in the media and gives talks to employers, government, schools and community groups.
