Bringing a unique expertise in agricultural water management to his role as Manager of Water Resources since 1994, Dr. Abdel-Razek has made a tremendous contribution to the agriculture industry. His work has not only helped improve water use management and productivity at many farms in Newfoundland and Labrador, but has created increased awareness surrounding water resources management throughout the entire agriculture industry.

Noted for his dedication to building relationships and fostering strong communications, Dr. Abdel-Razek’s projects implemented, installed, and tested proper water use conservation and efficiency measures on farms in the province. His projects are considered to be the first benchmark in agricultural water use monitoring. These innovative projects have allowed agricultural producers to gain valuable knowledge about the use of available water at their farms, and about management practices, including patterns of use, leak detection, comparison of irrigation methods, and livestock water consumption habits.

In addition to his work on improving water use management in the agriculture industry Dr. Abdel-Razek has been instrumental in: establishing innovative frameworks for water use allocation and granting of rights for hydro developments and other sectors; developing water rights and management of water resources chapters of Aboriginal land claims agreements and their implementation; university research collaborations; and supervising and advising 24 Masters’ students in water use projects and research. His achievements have been recognized at the national and international levels; in 2011 he received two prestigious awards, including the National Distinguished Service Award by the Canadian Water Resources Association.

His ability to influence positive change in the agriculture industry is a testament to his dedication and outreach abilities, through his hands-on work with agricultural producers, and his guidance offered to students, project assistants and colleagues, Dr. Abdel-Razek displays a passion for his field that is inspirational to many.
