Elson Cornish

Elson Cornish has been a member of the public service for over 30 years. As a weigh scale inspector with Service NL, his experience and knowledge serve to ensure the safety of our highways for employees, commercial carriers, and the general public.

Even when faced with difficult situations, Elson ensures that the Highway Traffic Act is enforced. He works with commercial carriers to generate awareness of the legislation, thereby strengthening their ability to conduct their business within established regulations. Elson’s technical expertise has been applauded by industry. For example, a local construction company has cited Elson’s professionalism, dedication, knowledge, courtesy and patience.

Members of the trucking industry have even been known to thank him when he has issued them a ticket; he is able to do it in a way that they understand they had been endangering themselves and the general public.

Always respectful and professional, Elson is highly regarded by his colleagues and the industry. In addition to enforcing current legislation, his experience and advice have greatly assisted the department in amending legislation as the industry changes. It has been said that he is the force behind changes to the Highway Traffic Act.

Elson’s regard for his co-workers is unparalleled. He tirelessly trains new employees and has the ability to not only pass along his knowledge and skill, but instill an attitude that will benefit the department as these workers embark on their careers in the public service.

He displays patience and courtesy when dealing with co-workers and the industry, making him a great example to all public service employees and a deserving recipient of this award.
