Gene Hickey has a zest for life, showing the best possible leadership by his own example. His energy, dedication and commitment have inspired countless employees to give their best and to achieve meaningful goals and lasting opportunities in the workplace. He takes special pleasure in staff development, offering encouragement and support so that those who work with him gain skills, experience and confidence to occupy leadership roles themselves.
Gene is a mine of information, a treasure trove of wisdom and a tireless source of guidance and help. He doesn’t seek praise or recompense, and redirects attention to those he has assisted, by passing on praise for their achievements. He has an uncanny knack for boosting spirits, and an unerring ability to put a smile on someone’s - or anyone’s - face. Gene believes in treating everyone with dignity and respect, and in turn he is highly respected and commands great loyalty from colleagues and clients alike.
Gene sits on many boards and participates in the work of several agencies and advocacy groups.
His leadership over the past three years as Chair of the provincial Inclusive and Well Being Initiative has helped make it a model of service delivery, not only for this province but also for the country as a whole. His ability to foster positive relationships was instrumental in the formation of the partnership with Health and Community Services’ Central Board, to enhance communications between providers and consumers, again providing a model for involving community in social inclusion planning.
It takes strong beliefs, a tremendous amount of hard work, dedication and extremely good working relationships to support individuals and communities to respect and value all citizens; Gene Hickey’s positive impact in this area cannot be overstated.
