Geological Survey Promotions Team

Sean O’Brien, Phillip Saunders, Carolina Valverde-Cardenas

Delivering top-quality technical information to clients at domestic and international mining conferences, trade shows and investment forums, and regularly interacting with potential investors from around the globe, the Geological Survey Division Promotions Team has positioned itself as an important strategic partner in the province’s mining sector.

Maintaining a mineral promotions website in both English and Mandarin, and with an ability to converse in English, Mandarin, French and Spanish, team members have forged successful working relationships with governments and industry in Europe and the Asia Pacific Region. Strong relationships have also been developed with other governments and industry stakeholders here in Canada.

Through their domestic and international promotional efforts, the team has helped Newfoundland and Labrador increase investment despite downturns in capital markets leading to new joint-ventures and multi-million dollar partnerships, particularly in western Labrador.

Perhaps most notably, the team’s work has made significant inroads in China – one of the world’s fastest growing economies, and home to some of the world’s largest companies. They provide leadership for other Provincial Government departments, agencies and officials seeking high-level meetings in China, and other Canadian jurisdictions seeking Chinese contacts and investment.

The team has been helping the province’s junior mining companies to promote their developments and this has resulted in successful partnerships. Global players such as Hebei Iron and Steel, China Minmetals, Wisco, Tata Steel and Mitsubishi have come to Newfoundland and Labrador and established joint-venture partnerships with local companies.

In helping to spread the word about our tremendous mining potential to the world, the team brings significant foreign investment to our doorstep. They have been praised by Mining Industry NL and its members for strengthening access to the global mining market and key audiences.

They are recognized for their relationship building and vision and for their commitment to promoting of the province’s mining industry.
