Mac Pitcher

Mac Pitcher is recognized as being one of the most knowledgeable sources on the natural history of the province’s wildlife. His vast knowledge is the result of academic learning, practical experience at Salmonier Nature Park and time spent trapping wildlife. His involvement in research on a provincial and global level, coupled with his commitment to a healthy environment, has resulted in many positive decisions for the province’s wildlife. From ensuring the health of the animals at Salmonier Nature Park to ensuring the preservation of endangered species, he truly defines excellence in public service.

Mac’s ability to work well with various government departments and divisions is evident in the strong relationships he has forged during his career. He has been the access point for numerous animal disease surveillance and research projects, and has been a source of information on wild animals for the benefit of wildlife management, domestic animal health and human disease risk evaluation. He is consistently the point person for advice, information, co-operation and guidance on many issues related to animal populations.

There are many times when animal diseases present a concern to the general public, or specific sectors of the livestock or domestic animal industries. As a result, there is often a need to perform surveillance or research activities and a site for these activities is needed. Mac can be relied on for his expertise and thorough understanding of the issue at hand, as well as to facilitate such undertakings.

Mac is recognized for the outstanding pride he takes in his work. His “green” living at home further supports his true commitment to the environment and our natural heritage. He is a noted historian on provincial wildlife species, and the research goals of many graduate students have been realized through his efforts and dedication.

Mac is very humble in his assessment of his contributions and has never looked for any credit for the valuable service he provides. His co-workers collectively echo the sentiment “You can always count on Mac,” and he modestly continues his efforts in wildlife management simply because he feels he can make a difference. His enthusiasm and generosity, along with his ability, will remain a significant part of his legacy.
