Human Resources, Labour and Employment
For more than 17 years, first as a social worker and now as a manager, Marilyn Adams has been a model to other managers and staff particularly for her efforts in valuing people. Marilyn’s approach has always included trust, honesty, respect and hope, never making clients feel that they need fixing. She currently oversees the Bell Island, Ferryland, Conception Bay South, Mount Pearl, Water Street and Regatta Plaza district offices of Human Resources, Labour and Employment.
Marilyn uses her influence to teach people sensitivity about poverty and social issues both within the department and the community-at-large. She has contributed greatly to the development of program and policy changes and, with clients, ensures that they are engaged in making decisions about their lives. No matter how many demands are placed on her she never says "I’m not available" or "I can’t help."
The same values that are bestowed upon clients are also extended to staff. She is renowned for her kindness and consideration. Despite her many years of working in the field, she has remained true to her values and focuses on making those around her feel appreciated.
A former client said it best when she said about Marilyn, "When I was put through to you, my life changed....You really didn’t know me but you saw the hurt in my heart and you HELPED me. You CARED." We should all be so lucky if in our careers as public servants, and as citizens, we have such an impact on someone’s life.
