Norm Mercer

Norm Mercer worked as a Mineral Exploration Consultant for the Department of Natural Resources for over 33 years – retiring just a few months ago. In this role, Norm was the main point of contact for the mining and exploration industry seeking information about the province’s mineral resources. And while this is true, it is an understatement. In fact, the heads of many internationally successful mineral exploration companies actually claim Norm gave them their start in the industry. They cite his no-fail attitude, unbounded energy, and great persistence as instrumental to their eventual success as he guided them through their early years in mineral exploration.

Norm is passionate about helping up-and-coming prospectors as he is a prospector at heart. He has been described as exceptional, inspirational and one of the greatest assets in this province in maintaining its excellent rating as a place to explore for minerals. He cherished his work with young people, their thank-you letters, cards and drawings are things he holds dear. Norm was always engaged and enthusiastic about passing along his love for geology, mining and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Recognized nationally and internationally, he has been called a great ambassador for the mining industry in this province.

He has a deep, core understanding of the science and art of mineral exploration, which he is passionate about sharing. Always the consummate professional, he approached his job with impeccable ethics and unmatched attention to getting the job done properly and efficiently. He demonstrated exceptional service to the public through his leadership, mentoring, dedication and relationship building.
