Richard St. Croix

Described as enthusiastic, friendly, outgoing and helpful, Richard St. Croix has a reputation as one of the foremost soils experts in Newfoundland and Labrador. By sharing his passion and expertise with farmers and co-workers and serving as a mentor to many, Rick has helped grow the province’s agriculture industry for nearly 30 years.

Over the past 15 years, Rick has been instrumental in the development of a province-wide soil survey and soil identification programs which identify prime areas suitable for agricultural development and other areas of high potential. He has also been a driving force in protecting these areas from competing land-use interests and development; ensuring that they remain available for future agricultural use. Rick has also been a major player in establishing the cranberry and organic soil-turf production industries in the province; helping to shepherd them from fledgling industries into growing and profitable ones. His dedication to his work has helped many growers and producers become established in locations with soil well suited to their needs.

Building upon his formal training, Rick has spent thousands of hours in the field, in the laboratory and collaborating with stakeholders in the agriculture sector. He also stays abreast of new developments and has demonstrated a commitment to life-long learning, improving his own knowledge and abilities which he shares with his colleagues and department.

His work has led to best practices in areas such as land clearing and organic soils usage and he has helped agricultural producers and growers make the most effective use of the resources available to them. Responding to phone calls and emails after hours, he is always eager to help those in the industry.

The advice, training and technical information he provides to co-workers and other government departments and agencies is often invaluable and always provided in the name of advancing agriculture.

Respected by his colleagues and those in the industry, Rick provides valuable training, mentorship and advice to colleagues, as well as farmers and industry players. Rick is honoured for his contributions to the provincial agriculture industry and for his complete devotion to his work in the field, laboratory and boardroom.
