The Roddickton Silviculture Team is being recognized for their contribution to the forestry sector in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Silviculture is the art and science of growing a forest from planting a seed to maturity to meet a variety of user group needs during the lifespan of that forest.

Created in 1989, the team’s primary purpose is to support sustainable forest management by increasing forest productivity and sawlog production. In addition, they ensure that harvested areas are regenerated through planting.

Efficient and versatile, this mobile crew can complete a variety of silviculture tasks while willing to accept any new challenge that comes their way.

It is a challenging and physically demanding career. time is spent in an outdoors environment regardless of weather. The team encounters heat, rain, flies and are constantly traversing rough terrain, up and down slopes, over stumps and blowdown which most times is hidden by waist deep raspberry bushes and other competing vegetation.

The team makes a remarkable contribution to the environment and helping mitigate climate change. In 2023, the crew hit a significant milestone of planting 23 million tree seedlings which has reforested more than 15,000 hectares of productive forest, a massive contribution to the capture and storage of carbon.
