Roger Haynes

2001
Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation (St. John's)

During the course of his long career, Roger Haynes has deepened and broadened his service delivery, at the same time maintaining a consistent, reliable, unwavering level of service quality.

Nearly twenty years ago, Roger laid the groundwork for a database of tourism performance indicators which he maintains to this day. This rich data set, harvested from diverse sources, has set the bar for primary tourism data in Atlantic Canada and, indeed, across the country. The travel and tourism database remains a key element in both industry and departmental planning and performance measurement today.

Roger’s dedication to program objectives and the overall goals of his department and of government sets an example for all who work with him. His development and implementation of an innovative project to capture visitor information for the Avalon Gateway Regional Economic Development Board, the Cape Shore Loop Tourism Association and the Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve is a stellar example of this.

Responding to the client group’s request for help, Roger worked with all stakeholders to develop a visitor information survey and comment card, and then trained and supervised those who would use it. Despite an already heavy workload, he rose to the challenge of government’s vision of building the tourism industry, developing rural economies and improving service quality at a major public facility.

He was also instrumental in developing an innovative work-at-home program that accommodates the particular needs of an Open Doors employee, allowing her to contribute fully to the department.

Roger creates and strengthens partnerships where-ever he works, increases productivity and instills well being. His signature quality is total and utter dependability. When all else is falling apart, he can always be counted on to deliver, no matter how challenging the project or the circumstances.
