Department of Government Services and Lands (St. John’s)
Tom Beckett has been with the Public Service since the late 1980s; he is a manager who treats everyone as a colleague, a leader who every day motivates, helps and inspires those working around him. He values people as individuals and finds creative ways to accommodate their individual needs and abilities. He encourages staff to become involved in projects and makes sure they get the training and development they need to do a good job.
Tom is a true mentor: he builds self-confidence and team-confidence by giving staff responsibility, the tools to do the job, and praise, credit and congratulations when they do well. He takes pride in his work and the work of his division, so his staff is willing to go the extra mile, looking for new and better ways to work.
Tom is very much a team player and makes everyone feel like a team. He participates staff meetings, listening carefully to what others have to say; yet he is always ready with advice and encouragement when needed. He’s a great morale-booster, and this has a very positive affect on client service. He sets an example for the whole public service.
