Newfoundland and Labrador is home to 43 terrestrial mammals, with three species occasionally appearing within our borders. Some of these species are not well known, like flying squirrels or jumping mice in Labrador; while others are elusive, such as lynx. Some of them have become so rare they are threatened or endangered, specifically the Newfoundland marten and the wolverine.

  • Newfoundland is home to 30 mammal species. Fourteen are considered native, and one species, the Grey Wolf, has been Extirpated. There are 12 exotic species in Newfoundland, and three Accidental/Vagrant species.
  • Labrador has 41 terrestrial mammal species, including 35 native, three exotic, and three Accidental/Vagrant species. The only animal considered At Risk in Labrador is the Wolverine.

Highlights from the 2000 Terrestrial Mammal General Status Assessments

  • Two Species are At Risk: America Marten (Newfoundland), and Wolverine (Labrador).
  • Five Species have been assigned the Status of Sensitive: Northern Myotis (province wide), Little Brown Myotis (Newfoundland), Polar Bear (Labrador), Arctic Hare (Newfoundland), and Rock Vole (Labrador).
  • 10% of the mammals in Labrador have a status Undetermineddue to lack of information.
  • 12 of the 26 Newfoundland’s resident mammals are Exotic.
  • Of native mammals, 82% in Labrador and 72% in Newfoundland are Secure.
