Urban Housing Starts Up 14 Units in January 2026

According to data released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), urban housing starts in Newfoundland and Labrador totalled 67 units in January 2026, an increase of 26.4% (or 14 units) compared to January 2025.

The increase in January 2026 was almost entirely attributable to higher activity in the St. John’s Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), where housing starts totalled 64 units, an increase of 23.1% (or 12 units) compared to January 2025.

Housing construction is generally limited in Newfoundland and Labrador between January and March. Caution is advised in interpreting percentage changes during this period.

At the national level, urban housing starts increased by 0.8% (or 131 units) in January 2026 compared to January 2025.
