The population of Newfoundland and Labrador decreased by 173 persons (or 0.03%) from July 1, 2025, to October 1, 2025. This marked the first quarter-over-quarter decrease in the province’s population since Q4 2020 (-0.03%). The province’s population stood at 549,738 as of October 1, 2025.
In Q3 2025, Newfoundland and Labrador’s population change was driven by net migration gains, which were offset by a natural population decrease (deaths exceeding births). Net migration totalled 453 persons in Q3 2025. Natural population change (births less deaths) was negative, down by 626 persons.
A net gain was recorded in international migration (+818), while a net loss was recorded in interprovincial migration (-365). International migration gains in Q3 2025 stemmed from a large influx of permanent (or landed) immigrants (+1,222), which was dampened by losses in net non-permanent residents (-350). On an interprovincial basis, the largest net gain in Q3 2025 was from Ontario (+161), while the largest net migration losses were to British Columbia (-229), New Brunswick (-169) and Alberta (-150).
At the national level, Canada’s population declined by 76,068 persons, or 0.2%, from July 1, 2025, to October 1, 2025. The decrease in Q3 2025 was due to a decline in international migration (-93,668 people), and particularly, a drop in non-permanent residents. This is the result of changing government policies concerning international migration.
