The value of retail sales in Newfoundland and Labrador totalled $1.1 billion in November 2025, a decrease of 0.5% compared to November 2024.
The largest gains in the actual value of retail sales in November 2025 compared to November 2024 occurred in ‘Motor vehicle and parts dealers’ (+6.7%) and ‘Health and personal care retailers’ (+14.8%). The largest decline occurred in ‘Gasoline stations and fuel vendors’ (-27.5%). This was largely due to lower prices for gasoline in November 2025 compared to November 2024, stemming from the removal of the federal consumer carbon tax on April 1, 2025, but also due to a lower price of Brent crude oil in November compared to the same month last year.
On a year-to-date basis, retail sales in Newfoundland and Labrador were 4.2% higher in the January to November 2025 period compared to the same period of 2024.
At the national level, retail sales increased by 1.8% in November 2025 compared to November 2024 and increased by 4.2% on a year-to-date basis. In November 2025, retail sales increased in every province on a year-over-year basis except in Newfoundland and Labrador, ranging from 0.4% in Saskatchewan to 6.6% in New Brunswick.
Statistics Canada’s Daily discusses retail sales on a seasonally adjusted basis. Seasonally adjusted retail sales for Newfoundland and Labrador decreased by 0.7% in November 2025 compared to October 2025 and increased by 1.3% for Canada.
