Gasoline and Associated Products – Fuel Storage Tank Registration

The storage of gasoline and associated products in fuel storage tanks is a regular practice across Newfoundland and Labrador at service stations, bulk fuel storage facilities, and other commercial and non-commercial operations.

With the exception of storage tank systems that are connected to a heating appliance with a capacity of 2,500 litres or less, gasoline and associated products storage tanks are required to be registered under the Storage and Handling of Gasoline and Associated Products Regulations.

Through a Memorandum-of-Understanding, the Department of Environment, Conservation and Climate Change (ECC) has authorized the Department of Government Services (GS) to act on its behalf with respect to the registration of gasoline and associated products in storage tanks.

A registration database is maintained by GS to track the following information:

  • Owner – the primary owner of the tank
  • Company – the company that owns the tank (if company owned)
  • Tank Location – the community where the tank is physically located
  • Tank Type – the construction standard to which the tank has been fabricated
  • Product Type – the petroleum based/derived substance being stored
  • Tank Capacity – the effective volume of product a tank can store
  • Tank Position – the location of the tank either above or below ground
  • Registration Number – the current registration numbering system used to register tanks
  • GAP Number – the former (legacy) registration numbering system used to register tanks

Registration reports will be generated from this database and posted on a quarterly basis.
