Short-Term Training

What Is It? 

The Short-Term Training Program helps people in Newfoundland and Labrador get support for training programs that are less than 12 weeks long. These programs are not covered by student aid. The goal is to help you prepare for, find, or keep a job. 

This program also supports apprentices who are called to attend class training. 

Who Can Apply? 

To qualify, you must: 

  • Live in Newfoundland and Labrador 
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who can work in Canada 
  • Take part in Case Managed Services (this means working with a case manager) 
  • Have an Employment Plan before getting support
    (Note: Apprentices attending class call training don’t need an Employment Plan) 

What Support Can You Get? 

You may get help with: 

  • Living expenses (like rent and food) 
  • Training costs (like tuition, books, equipment, or tutoring) 
  • Transportation 
  • Childcare 
  • Disability-related supports 

If you already receive Income Support, you’ll continue to get your regular shelter and basic living benefits. 

 What Training Is Eligible? 

  • The training must be at a registered school or training institution  
  • If the course is less than 50 hours, the school doesn’t need to be registered 
  • Your application must be approved by the Department before starting your training 

How to Apply 

  1. Complete a Request for Service form 
  2. Create an Employment Plan at your local Employment Centre
