Wildfire Relief: Conception Bay North

The following initiatives stem from the work of the ministerial committee created to support recovery efforts in the Conception Bay North Area. The committee continues to work diligently to coordinate efforts with all partners and is focused on immediate relief and medium-term recovery supports.

Financial Assistance and Supports Available for Households 

The registration process for emergency financial assistance for primary households ($500) evacuated due to wildfire will be closing on Monday, September 15, at 8:00 p.m. NDT. For more information, please click here.

If your household was ordered to evacuate from your primary residence by the province or municipality due to wildfire in 2025, for more than 14 days, you are eligible to receive an additional $500 payment. (Effective August 27, 2025) 

If you were ordered to evacuate your primary home in the Conception Bay North area for more than 14 days, if it is unhabitable and not insured, help is available. 

  • $1,000 will be provided to the household, once a month, to those who can reside in private accommodations with family, friends, or community members. 
  • Up to $1,500 will be provided to the household, once a month, to assist with the cost of rental accommodations. You must keep and provide the receipts.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador Housing will assist residents find accommodations at licensed hospitality establishments, like hotels, for those who are unable to secure either private or rental options. Eligible households must register by calling toll free: 1-855-724-3391. 

The Temporary Housing Assistance Program has been extended to March 31, 2026. 

Households must be registered with the Canadian Red Cross. If you have already registered, you do not need to again. For more information, please click here.

Support for Small to Medium-sized Businesses

Employers whose business has been impacted by wildfire, who are interested in employment supports, as well as hiring affected individuals are asked to register by emailing employmentprograms@gov.nl.ca.

By registering, organizations will receive personalized assistance, like human resources support and invitations to upcoming job fairs. 

For in-person assistance, an Employment Response Team is set up at 17 Industrial Crescent at the Carbonear Employment Centre. 

Wage Subsidies 

  • Employers in Conception Bay North or those with employees living in the area can get up to 42 weeks of wage subsidy (up from 28 weeks). 
  • Employers may be approved to hire more than one affected individual at a time. 
  • Employers may fill existing vacant positions with individuals who were impacted by the wildfires.

Meeting Spaces are also available at Employment Centres. 

Evacuation Business Stipend (Applications Now Open)
The program will provide a one-time non-repayable contribution of financial support to small and medium enterprises (SME’s) within the Conception Bay North Evacuation Order area.

  • $1,500 for businesses with up to nine employees.
  • $2,500 for businesses with 10 to 99 employees.

Eligible applicants will be notified by email if they are approved to receive this support and assistance will be provided as soon as possible. The application period for this emergency assistance will close on December 5, 2025. Support for Employees

Individuals whose employment has been impacted by wildfires are asked to complete the Request for Service form to access employment services. By registering, individuals will receive personalized assistance, like job search and resume writing support. 

For in-person assistance, an Employment Response Team is set up at 17 Industrial Cresent at the Carbonear Employment Centre. 

Work Supports Program
The program amount has been increased to $2,000 per person (up from $1,000). This can help replace work tools, equipment, attire, and other costs to get back to work.  

Self-employed individuals can also recieve this support to help restart their operations. 

Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) Program Reopened
Applications are now being accepted for community-based, not-for-profit projects that provide Employment Insurance (EI) to eligible individuals. 

Eligible organizations are invited to submit proposals in the following areas: 

Community Recovery and Remediation  

  • Replacement of damaged community infrastructure 
  • Clean-up and restoration efforts

Post-Fire Economic Recovery  

  • Initiatives that support local economic revitalization  
  • Employment opportunities that support long-term community capacity

Forestry and Silviculture Activities 

  • Wildfire site reclamation 
  • Site preparation for rebuilding destroyed infrastructure

Fire Prevention and Wildfire Preparedness 

  • Fire risk assessment and mitigation planning 
  • Public outreach to enhance community readiness

Water Quality 

Wildfires or fire suppression measures may impact private well water. Please click here for more information on wildfires and wells, or contact the Department of Environment and Climate Change at water@gov.nl.ca.   

When deemed safe to do so, sampling arrangements will be made for areas impacted by wildfire or fire suppression measures.
