Description and Primary Use
Severe alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency in children most frequently presents as liver disease, cholestasis and cirrhosis. Low levels may be associated with liver cirrhosis, liver tumors and other hepatic and pulmonary problems. Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency in adults results in pulmomary emphysemia and hepatic diseases. As alpha1-antitrypsin is an acute-phase protein, it's level can increase several fold in acute or active chronic infammation. Therefore, patients with alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency may have falsely normal levels during acute illness.
