- Description and Primary Use
- This test (FIT) for occult blood in stool detects the globin part of hemoglobin. As it specifically detects human globin, it is not affected by dietary sources of blood and thereby is superior to the FOBT test. Since hemoglobin (globin) from bleeding in the upper digestive tract is broken down before it reaches the lower digestive tract, upper GI bleeds are not usually detected by the FIT test. There are several possible causes of blood in stool but one important cause is presence of polps or cancers in the colon.
