Derrick Bragg Leadership Award

The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, in partnership with the Professional Municipal Administrators of Newfoundland and Labrador, has established the Derrick Bragg Leadership Award to recognize those individuals who make significant and lasting contributions within the province’s municipal sector.

The late Minister Derrick Bragg was passionate about the sustainability of rural Newfoundland and Labrador and the vital role of local governments in improving the quality of life of residents. Minister Bragg proudly served 30 years as the Town Clerk-Manager of his hometown of Greenspond and as the Member of the House of Assembly for Fogo Island-Cape Freels for eight years.

The Derrick Bragg Leadership Award will be presented annually to recognize a town clerk, town manager, town clerk/manager or chief administrative officer who goes above and beyond in all aspects of municipal operations and brings compassion, commitment and community pride to local government.

AWARD CRITERIA
To be eligible for this award, the individual must demonstrate dedication to their municipality, the municipal sector and public service. This can be demonstrated through two or more of the following ways:

  • Exhibits fairness and inclusivity in all aspects of municipal operations and decisions.
  • Develops and/or implements innovations that benefit municipal governance.
  • Actively mentors staff, municipal administrator colleagues, and others within their organization.
  • Exhibits a strong sense of community pride through involvement in local projects or events that have positively impacted residents and the municipality.
  • Fosters relationships, enhances collaboration and demonstrates strong leadership skills.
  • Demonstrates compassion and a willingness to go above and beyond to help others, especially in times of hardship.
  • Exhibits support and advocacy for municipal administrators, as well as community concerns and opportunities for growth.

Nominations for the Derrick Bragg Leadership Award has now closed. The application process for 2026 will begin in the spring of 2026.
