Become an Approved Automobile Dealer

Individuals or corporations who engage in the business of buying, selling or exchanging new or second hand motor vehicles or trailers must be approved by the Registrar.

Approved dealers may be assigned dealer (ie demonstrator) licence plates for use on their vehicles; and may be authorized to issue temporary vehicle registrations; collect related fees; and distribute licence plates and/or markers on behalf of Motor Registration.

New Automobile Dealer Regulations have been developed to further define the roles and responsibilities of our Approved Automobile Dealers. This will require all current Dealers to reapply for their Dealer License.  An updated online Dealer Web is being rolled out to reflect the changes in these new regulations.

Application Requirements for an Individual/Sole-Proprietor

  • Complete a detailed application
  • Certificate of Conduct for each owner
  • Driver’s licence or Government issued photo identification number for each owner.
  • Provide a detailed copy of the security (bond). Tiers:
    • Bond amount no less than $5,000 where total monthly registrations does not exceed $5,000
    • Bond amount no less than $15,000 where total monthly registrations does not exceed $15,000
    • Bond amount no less than $30,000 where total monthly registrations does not exceed $30,000
    • Bond amount no less than $50,000 where total monthly registrations does not exceed $50,000
    • Bond amount no less than $75,000 where total monthly registrations value exceed $50,000
  • Proof of HST Registration
  • Proof of Insurance – commercial general liability insurance policy
  • Proof of Insurance – standard garage policy with motor vehicle sales endorsement
  • Land must meet zoning requirements
  • Approval from city, municipal council to carry on business as a Dealer
  • Pay the prescribed fee

  • Certificate of Conduct for each director
  • Provide a detailed copy of the security (bond). Tiers:
    • $5,000 for monthly registrations with a value that does not exceed $5000
    • $15,000 for monthly registrations with a value that does not exceed $15,000
    • $30,000 for monthly registrations with a value that does not exceed $30,000
    • $50,000 for monthly registrations with a value that does not exceed $50,000
    • $75,000 for monthly registrations with a value that exceeds $50,000
  • Current Certificate of Good Standing from the Registry of Companies (Corporations)
  • Proof of HST Registration
  • Proof of Insurance – commercial general liability insurance policy
  • Proof of Insurance – standard garage policy with motor vehicle sales endorsement
  • Land must meet zoning requirements
  • Approval from city, municipal council to carry on business as a Dealer
  • Pay the prescribed fee
