Entry Level Training FAQ

1. I already have my authorized instruction for Class 1. Do I need to take this training?

Yes, starting January 3, 2024, all drivers requesting a Road Test for a Class 1 Driver’s Licence will have to provide original proof of required training.

2. I already have my authorized instruction for Class 1. Can I attempt my Road Test now (on or after Jan 03, 2024) and complete the training later?

No, applicants who are scheduled for a Road Test starting January 3, 2024 will have to provide original proof of required training.

3. I already have my Class 1 Driver’s Licence. Do I need to complete this training?

No. All previously licenced Class 1 drivers are exempt from the required training.

4. I already have my Class 1 Driver’s Licence without Entry Level Training. Am I restricted to where I can drive?

No, you may operate a Class 1 vehicle in other jurisdictions provided you continue to reside in Newfoundland and Labrador and maintain a valid, non-expired Class 1 Driver’s Licence.

5. I have an out of province Class 1 Driver’s Licence, I do not have Entry Level Training, and I have moved to Newfoundland and Labrador. Can I still exchange my Class 1 Driver’s Licence?

Yes, your Class 1 Driver’s Licence will be transferred if you have at least 2 years of experience as a licenced Class 1 Driver’s. You may need to provide an abstract, confirmation letter from the licencing authority to verify experience.

6. How long is this training?

The mandated training is 112.5 hours in length, including air brakes training. This equates to approximately 6 weeks of training.

7. Where can I complete this training?

Individuals are encouraged to contact any institution of their choice from Table B of the approved driving schools.

8. I have previously completed Class 1 training at an approved public/private training institution which meets or exceeds the Entry Level Training minimum requirements. Will my Driver’s Licence be updated to include completion of Entry Level Training.

Yes, an individual can have their Driver’s Licence updated to reflect completion of an Entry Level Training program upon presentation of an original certificate of successful completion of an approved equivalent training program.

9. Who is responsible to pay for the Entry Level Training?

Individuals are responsible for all costs. There are programs which may be available to assist in the funding of this training:

10. I previously held my Class 1 Driver’s Licence and voluntarily relinquished it; do I need to complete Entry Level Training if I want to reinstate my Class 1 licence?

If your Class 1 licence was relinquished more than 5 years ago you will be required to complete Entry Level Training.

If you did not have 2 years of Class 1 driver experience at the time your licence was relinquished, you will be required to complete Entry Level Training.

11. My Class 1 Driver’s Licence was suspended for medical reasons, I have been cleared medically, do I have to complete Entry Level Training to re-instate my Class 1 Driver Licence?

If your Class 1 licence was medically suspended more than 5 years ago you will be required to complete Entry Level Training.

If you did not have 2 years of Class 1 driver experience at the time your licence was medically suspended, you will be required to complete Entry Level Training.

12. My Class 1 Driver’s Licence was reclassified due to an expired medical; do I need to complete Entry Level Training if I want to reinstate my Class 1 licence?

If your Class 1 licence was reclassified more than 5 years ago you will be required to complete Entry Level Training.

If you did not have 2 years of Class 1 driver experience at the time your licence was reclassified, you will be required to complete Entry Level Training.
