Apply for a Driver’s Licence Refund

Refunds are issued as per the Fees Policy. A refund may be issued for the driver’s licence fees if:

  • you leave the Province to take up residence in another jurisdiction
  • the individual is deceased (refund is issued to the “Estate of”)
  • you voluntarily surrender the driver’s licence or
  • are asked to return the driver’s licence for medical reasons

The refund amount is calculated from the date the licence was issued to the date surrendered and may vary by class of driver’s licence.

Refund will not be issued when:

  • the time remaining on the licence at the time of surrender is 12 months or less
  • the licence is a learner’s permit (class 5I or class 6I)

To apply for a refund

  • fax to 709-729-0102 or
  • apply in writing to Motor Registration at PO Box 8710, St. John’s, NL, A1B 4J5 or drop box

Please include:

  • your driver’s licence card
  • indicate why you are requesting a refund:
    • moved out of province
    • voluntary surrender
    • surrender for medical reasons
    • driver deceased (must be submitted by a representative of the estate; and the refund will be issued to the “Estate of…”)
  • return address
  • telephone number or email address where you can be contacted

Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for processing
