A Newfoundland & Labrador registered vehicle can be given to an immediate family member that resides in Newfoundland & Labrador as a gift.
Immediate family includes:
- husband-wife
- common law spouse (must be living together for a minimum of 12 months)
- father-mother
- son-daughter (includes step-children)
- sister-brother
- grandparents
- grandchildren
- any in-law relationship (includes common law)
A vehicle given from an immediate family member who resides outside Newfoundland & Labrador is only exempt from RST if the vehicle was owned by the immediate family member for 2 years or greater prior to the vehicle entering in the province.
How to Gift a Vehicle:
- Visit MyGovNL to notify Motor Registration that you no longer own the vehicle.
- Complete the bill of sale on the back of the registration document and give the original to your family member (we recommend you keep a copy for your records).
- If the vehicle is registered to more than one person (ex a husband and wife) both owners must sign the gift notice.

How to Register a Gifted Vehicle:
- Visit MyGovNL to transfer a vehicle that was gifted to you.
- Valid insurance is required.
- A transfer fee is required.
- A gifted vehicle is not subject to tax if the recipient is “immediate family”.
- An inspection certificate is not required (does not apply for vehicles that are imported).
