Inspection Requirements

Vehicle inspections must only be completed at an Official Inspection Station that has been authorized to perform inspections for that class of vehicle. A police / traffic officer or the Registrar of Motor Vehicles can request that an inspection be completed on any vehicle type at any time.   

Cars, Light Trucks and Vans (GVWR 4500kg or Less)

Inspections are required on used vehicles before the vehicle can be transferred.  Inspections are only valid for 30 days after they are issued. 

Taxis / Ride Share Vehicles

Taxis and vehicles used to provide ride sharing are required to have an inspection completed annually.  Proof of inspection must be carried in the vehicle and an inspection sticker indicating the date the inspection was completed must be displayed. 

Commercial Vehicles

Commercial vehicles, including tractors, trucks, trailers and semi-trailers are required to have a commercial motor vehicle inspection completed annually.  Proof of inspection must be carried in the vehicle and an inspection sticker indicating the date the inspection was completed must be displayed. 

School Buses

School buses are required to have a commercial motor vehicle inspection completed twice a year – July and December.  Proof of inspection must be carried in the vehicle and an inspection sticker indicating the date the inspection was completed must be displayed.  A copy of the inspection certificate must be sent to Motor Registration Division.  Failure to submit the required inspection will result in the vehicle registration being suspended. 

Public Passenger Buses

Public passenger buses are required to have a commercial motor vehicle inspection completed twice a year – March and September.  Proof of inspection must be carried in the vehicle and an inspection sticker indicating the date the inspection was completed must be displayed.  A copy of the inspection certificate must be sent to Motor Registration Division.  Failure to submit the required inspection will result in the vehicle registration being suspended. 

Motorcycles

Motorcycles are required to be inspected when requested by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles or by any police / traffic officer. 

Light Trailers with a GVWR 4500kg or Less

Light trailers (including recreational trailers) are required to be inspected when requested by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles or by any police / traffic officer. 

Salvage Vehicles

Vehicles that have been branded by an insurance company as salvage are required to have a three-part (salvage) inspection completed before the vehicle can be registered or operated on any road.  This inspection includes a mechanical inspection, structural (body) inspection and a 4 wheel alignment.

Commercial Vehicles

The inspection standard for Commercial Vehicles is based on National Safety Code Standard 11. The inspection standard applies to all commercial vehicles in the Province.

Trucks with a GVWR > 4500kg

Trailers with a GVWR > 4500kg or fifth wheel trailers (Not including recreational trailers)

Buses with a passenger carrying capacity of 10 passengers or more
