The Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that Pam Parsons, MHA for Harbour Grace-Port de Grave, has been appointed to the position of Secretariat for the 2025 Canada Summer Games

As Secretariat for the 2025 Canada Summer Games, MHA Parsons will act as the Provincial Government’s conduit for the local bid committee and future host committee, to help facilitate a more cohesive approach between local and provincial agencies in an effort to deliver a successful Canada Summer Games in 2025.

Over 5,000 athletes, coaches and officials will compete in 16-18 sports over a two-week period, representing the highest level of national competition for developing amateur athletes. The 2025 Canada Games will be an economic driver to the province, producing an anticipated 550 jobs, while having a direct economic impact of up to $110 million. The City of St. John’s is the only municipality in the province to formally bid on hosting the Games. The Canada Games Council will announce the successful bid in March 2021.

The Canada Games is the largest amateur sporting event in the country and is a national multi-sport competition held every two years, alternating between Winter Games and Summer Games. The Games contribute to Canada’s sport development system, in addition to their lasting legacy of sport facilities, community pride and national unity. Newfoundland and Labrador last hosted the Winter Games in Corner Brook in 1999, and the Summer Games in St. John’s in 1977.

Quote
“Hosting the 2025 Canada Games is an incredible opportunity for sport development, community engagement and tourism in Newfoundland and Labrador. We are thrilled that St. John’s has submitted its intention to host the Games, and I am confident MHA Parsons will play a key role throughout the planning process. The province is well-positioned to support our athletes to prepare for and achieve enhanced performance in 2025. Through the power of sport, the spotlight will shine brightly on our capital city and indeed, the entire province.”
