Call for Proposals: Helping Newcomers Feel at Home

December 21, 2020

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and its partners are working to help ensure newcomers receive the services and support they need to feel they truly belong and have found a new home in the province.

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Immigration, Skills and Labour, today issued a call for proposals to enhance settlement and integration services throughout the province. Priority will be given to proposals that offer services in key areas, such as:

Community Attachment
Newfoundland and Labrador is a safe and welcoming place to live and work and newcomers may need help getting to know everything their community has to offer. For example, resources to help them become familiar with the province, or services to ensure local workplaces are educated about the benefits of diversity.

International Graduate Supports
Many newcomers first arrive in Newfoundland and Labrador as international students, drawn by the world-class post-secondary education offered at Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic. By the time they graduate, these international students have built a life for themselves in the province and many want to stay. Supporting them can mean helping them start a business, or find employment in their field of study.

International Recruitment
Employers in a number of sectors throughout Newfoundland and Labrador have a growing need for highly educated employees with specialized skills for positions that have proven difficult to fill locally. These services will help prepare employers and prospective immigrants to work together, such as job matching, interviewing, and professional networking.

Immigration Pathway Navigation
Immigration pathways are complex, and often require significant effort and knowledge to navigate, as much for local employers seeking to address their longstanding or specialized workforce needs through immigration, as for newcomers wishing to become permanent residents. Innovative projects focusing on making this navigation process easier for current and prospective newcomers and employers will ultimately lead to better immigration experiences.

A complete list of funding priorities and eligibility guidelines is included in the Call for Proposals.

Organizations are invited to submit proposals by 11:59 p.m. NST on February 5, 2021.

Potential applicants are encouraged to email any questions to immigration@gov.nl.ca.

Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Provincial Government continues to plan for future growth and to meet the 2022 target of increasing immigration to 2,500 new permanent residents annually – all of whom would be subject to the established COVID-19 special measures orders and guidelines.

 Quote
“Newfoundlanders and Labradorians understand the many benefits of immigration because we see how newcomers enrich our communities. Each year when we call for proposals, our partners go above and beyond in identifying the most impactful ways their organizations can help bring more families to the province and keep them here. Their experience and expertise is invaluable and I look forward to receiving their exciting, innovative proposals.”
