The Provincial Government is monitoring forecast information on an approaching weather system anticipated to affect the province beginning tonight (Monday, December 21) and continuing into tomorrow (Tuesday, December 22).
Rainfall warnings have been issued for the island of Newfoundland and snowfall warnings have been issued for parts of Labrador. There is the potential for more than 50 mm of rain to fall across parts of southern and western Newfoundland, as well as along the Labrador Strait tonight continuing into Tuesday. Upwards of 100 mm may fall in southwestern Newfoundland accompanied by wind gusts of 100 km/hr. Winds in this range can damage buildings and loose objects may be tossed and cause injury or damage. The same system is forecast to bring up to 30 cm of blowing snow to central and coastal Labrador.
Due to high amounts of rain anticipated accompanied by mild temperatures and the potential of flooding, municipalities and local service districts should review their emergency management plans and ensure infrastructure such as roads, ditches and drains are clear of debris.
Residents and communities are asked to use caution and to take steps to ensure personal and public safety. Visit here for more information on emergency preparedness.
As this is a particularly busy travel week, drivers may want to adjust their plans as appropriate. Stay up-to-date by checking provincial road conditions using the NL 511 app or visit nl511.ca. Remember to always drive according to the conditions in your area.
The public is encouraged to monitor Environment Canada for the latest weather warnings in their area.
