Applications are now being accepted for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2021-22 Grants to Youth Organizations.

Today, the Honourable John G. Abbott, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, announced $451,500 for the program, as part of Budget 2021. The deadline for applications is July 27, 2021.

Grants to Youth Organizations provide project funding to not-for-profit youth-based or youth-serving organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador for youth engagement initiatives and activities.

Funds are available to support projects that encourage skill, knowledge, and leadership development; support youth in contributing to their community, region or province; enhance, promote or support partnerships, collaboration or inclusion; and/or fill a gap in services.

As part of the Provincial Government’s focus on increasing interaction between youth and older adults across Newfoundland and Labrador, this year applicants are encouraged to consider projects that are geared toward intergenerational activities. Such activities and projects will help build relationships, and share experiences and skills between generations.

In 2020-21, 38 applicants received funding through the program, including the Ches Penney Family YMCA in St. John’s. The funding helped the organization serve more than 400 youth and young adults from families with low income last year, giving them unlimited access to a wide range of sport, recreation, fitness and life skills programming to help them develop and maintain healthy habits and build confidence.

A full list of the 2020-21 recipients is provided in the backgrounder below.

“The YMCA of Newfoundland and Labrador sincerely appreciates the funding we receive from government to support our work with youth. The government’s on-going commitment to youth serving organizations is important, particularly now as organizations in our communities focus on emerging from the pandemic and as we all continue our efforts for and with the youth of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
