With the summer season now officially in full swing and the province re-opening to the rest of Canada, many residents and visitors will take to the roadways to explore and enjoy Newfoundland and Labrador.
It is incumbent upon everyone to keep road safety top of mind, in an effort to prevent senseless incidents on the province’s highways. There are some basic rules everyone must follow: wear your seat belt; do not drive distracted or fatigued; don’t text and drive; adhere to speed limits; slow down in construction zones; and move over for emergency and other designated vehicles.
The Provincial Government’s road safety message also extends to all motorized vehicles and responsible use of off-road vehicles is encouraged as well. It is important to remember it is illegal to operate any type of motorized vehicle if your ability to drive is impaired by alcohol or drugs. It is also important to be motorcycle aware, recognizing the need to be vigilant of motorcyclists that share the province’s roadways.
Quote
“We continuously make changes to the Highway Traffic Act to help make our roadways safer. However, changes to legislation alone are not enough. We must all also be vigilant of the choices we make when we operate a motorized vehicle and make every effort to do so safely, recognizing that many incidents on our roadways are preventable.”
