Public Advisory: Vehicle Transfer Services Available Online

October 22, 2021

A new service has been added to Digital Government and Service NL’s suite of online tools. Those purchasing previously-owned vehicles through private sale can now transfer the vehicle registration online.

Motorists can access the Vehicle Transfer page from the Motor Registration website. The process to transfer a vehicle is clearly outlined on the website, including seller and purchaser obligations, and Bill of Sale requirements.

When a vehicle is purchased through a private sale, the purchaser is required to transfer ownership within 10 days. The option to complete this transaction online not only saves valuable time for the purchaser, but also frees up in-person appointments for other Motor Registration transactions that cannot be carried out online.

When someone sells a vehicle, returns it from a lease, or if the vehicle is written off, Motor Registration must be notified within 10 days. This can also be done online at MyGovNL.ca.

The purchaser is able to drive their new vehicle while waiting for their vehicle transfer request to be processed, as long as the seller’s vehicle registration permit, bill of sale and Public Liability Insurance Card is kept in the vehicle while it is being operated. This documentation must be produced to a traffic officer upon request.

This vehicle transfer online service aligns with the Provincial Government’s continued focus on customers flexibility and convenience.
