Effective immediately, amendments to the Licensing and Equipment Regulations under the Highway Traffic Act will see fines further increased for the illegal modification of vehicle exhaust systems.

In May 2021, the fine for such an offence increased from $20 to $100. Effective immediately, fines will range from $250 to $1,000. These fines are on par with many jurisdictions across the country.

The amendments apply to all vehicles, including motorcycles, operating on any roadway in the province.

Quotes
“Excessive vehicle noise caused by modified exhaust systems creates disruption in many neighbourhoods and communities. These disturbances wake sleeping children and cause distress to pets and wildlife. Additionally, excessive noise can affect long-term hearing, as well as a person’s health and well-being. It is Government’s hope that increasing fines will deter this practice.”
Honourable Sarah Stoodley
Minister of Digital Government and Service NL

“The increased fines for excessive vehicle noise send a strong message that as a Government we are taking this issue seriously. We remain committed to working with communities and our policing agencies to ensure the motoring public are following safe practices on our roadways.”
Honourable John Hogan
Minister of Justice and Public Safety
