The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Hughes Brook Bridge Replacement                                                     (Reg 2139)
Proponent: Department of Transportation and Infrastructure

The proponent is proposing to replace the deteriorated bridge that crosses Hughes Brook at kilometer 8 along Route 440. The existing bridge would be closed, demolished and removed such that no significant debris enters the river. The new bridge would measure approximately 24 metres in length and 12 metres in width. A temporary diversion would be constructed parallel to and downstream of the existing bridge and would be removed once the new bridge is open to traffic.

The undertaking was registered on May 12, 2021; the deadline for public comments is June 18, 2021; and, the minister’s decision is due by June 26, 2021.

IOC Smallwood North Extension Project                                            (Reg. 2140)
Proponent: Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC)

The proponent is proposing to expand the boundaries of the existing Smallwood Pit to support ongoing operations in Labrador City. The proposed extension of Smallwood Pit is located within IOC’s existing mining leases and encompasses approximately 160 hectares. The proposed project includes extending the Smallwood North pit to the north, development of a new waste dump, construction of new power lines, construction of new pit dewatering wells and the development of surface water handling systems. Project activities include vegetation and tree clearing/mulching; removal and stockpiling of overburden, organic material and topsoil; road construction; drilling and blasting; waste rock removal and storage; construction and installation of surface and ground water management and infrastructure; and, transportation of ore to existing on-site facilities for processing.

The undertaking was registered on May 13, 2021; the deadline for public comments is June 18, 2021; and, the minister’s decision is due by June 27, 2021.

Peaches Cove – Green Bay Walking & Multipurpose Trails          (Reg. 2141)
Proponent: Peaches Cove – Green Bay Development Inc.

The proponent proposes to develop walking and multi-purpose trails from Melrose, in Trinity Bay North to Peaches Cove, and along the coastline to Green Bay. One of the trails would be a shoreline trail and the other would be constructed as a multi-purpose trail for All-Terrain Vehicles. There would also be three interconnecting trails from the shoreline trail to the multi-purpose trail to access viewing platforms placed along the shoreline trail.

The undertaking was registered on May 13, 2021; the deadline for public comments is June 18, 2021; and, the minister’s decision is due by June 27, 2021.

Northern Peninsula Spruce Budworm Control Test                        (Reg. 2142)
Proponent: Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture

The proponent proposes to test the use of COMPOUND SBW as a non-lethal method to control the spruce budworm forest pest. COMPOUND SBW is a naturally produced pheromone of the spruce budworm and is expected to reduce their populations by disrupting the mating behaviour of the adults. The test would involve one application of COMPOUND SBW to three 150-hectare forest areas in the Whitewash Road forest access road network, northwest of Deer Lake, near Bonne Bay Big Pond. The product would be applied by helicopter using conventional spray equipment.

The undertaking was registered on May 14, 2021; the deadline for public comments is June 18, 2021; and, the minister’s decision is due by June 28, 2021.
