Today, the Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, announced $147,000 in annual funding for the Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador. This continued support highlights the importance of community partnerships and their role in creating a healthy, environmentally sustainable province.
Minister Davis joined Green Teams at the Royal Canadian Legion in Pleasantville as they received training about climate change that will prepare them to head out into communities to complete projects with youth this summer. The Provincial Government is providing this funding to the Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador to assist with its operations, including public education and outreach services, and the Climate Change Education Centre.
Green Teams conduct events in their communities in the summer with a goal of fostering environmental and cultural literacy in the province’s youth. While some events focus on a topic specific to their respective community or project, all teams deliver “Climate Change 101” to youth and community groups in their region. This presentation covers the basics of climate change science in a youth-appropriate way, with hands-on activities that encourage youth to engage with the impacts of a changing climate.

“Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador would like to extend sincere gratitude to the Department of Environment and Climate Change. Through a long standing and meaningful partnership with the Department, the Climate Change Education Centre has had the great privilege of educating more than a hundred thousand youth with classroom based, curriculum linked climate education. The investment of the department also enables us to empower youth and communities across Newfoundland and Labrador with resources and expertise to develop and implement climate change solutions that meet local needs and priorities. Through this outstanding partnership, people across the province are learning about climate change, making a difference and engaging in powerful discourse to help contribute to strong, vibrant and resilient communities.”
