The Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, along with Gudie Hutchings, Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, announced approximately $153,000 in cost-shared funding to support a Furnace Replacement Project in 35 Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) units in Corner Brook with more energy efficient or electric models.

The funding is part of a $524,100 investment by the Government of Canada and a $262,030 investment by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for the replacement of residential oil furnaces in 254 housing units across the province which will result in an annual reduction of 421 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

This is one of 13 climate change projects in Newfoundland and Labrador recently announced under the Climate Change Challenge Fund. The NLHC is receiving $76,575 from the Federal Government and $38,287 from the Provincial Government toward the cost of the Corner Brook project. The NLHC is also contributing $38,287 in support of the Corner Brook project.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Climate Change Challenge Fund is a competitive grant-based program to fund greenhouse gas reduction projects. The fund supports capital projects that lower greenhouse gas emissions and was available to organizations across commercial, municipal, not-for-profit sectors and, Indigenous governments and organizations.

The province’s Climate Change Challenge Fund will receive up to $19.9 million through the federal Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund, an increase of $8.5 million in response to strong interest from organizations.
