Today, the Provincial Government is recognizing the Global Day of Climate Action and the importance of working together to combat the effects of climate change.

Fridays for Future is a youth-led global strike movement that started in August 2018 urging action on climate change.

The Provincial Government has completed or taken action on all 45 items in its Climate Change Action Plan. The plan will reduce greenhouse gas emissions; stimulate clean innovation and growth; and build resilience to climate change impacts. The Action Plan supports the province’s development of a green economy and to move the province forward both environmentally and economically.

Under the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund, the Provincial and Federal Governments have provided funding for 13 projects for communities in Newfoundland and Labrador to lower emissions, improve fuel efficiency and help communities save on energy costs.

In Budget 2021, the province announced $500,000 for the Electric Vehicle Rebate Program to provide a $2,500 rebate to people who purchase a new or used battery electric vehicle, and $1 million for the Oil to Electric Rebate Program, to provide a rebate of up to $2,500 for homeowners to transition from oil to electricity heating. Applications are now available for both programs.

 Quote
“I commend the youth of our province and their commitment for climate action as they lead change in our province. Climate challenges are not disappearing and we need to prepare and protect our environment for generations to come as we move toward achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.”
Honourable Bernard Davis
