The following statement was issued today from the Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.
“On behalf of the people of the province, I offer condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family on the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He was a true friend to Canada.
As the longest serving consort in British history, Prince Philip was passionately involved in many charitable causes for decades and leaves behind a remarkable legacy. His visits here were always highly anticipated where his natural warmth and affinity for our people was on full display.
His work continues to have a strong impact in Newfoundland and Labrador today where the Duke of Edinburgh Awards are presented annually to many accomplished young people from the province in recognition of their volunteer work and commitment to personal growth. The program served as the stepping stone for the future accomplishments of many of our most successful and prominent Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
Flags at provincial government buildings across the province are being flown at half-mast in Prince Philip’s honour.”
