September 17, 2021

The Honourable Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, encourages all residents to participate in the 2021 Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 19.

While no large events have been planned for this year’s run, people are still encouraged to participate – around the community, in a backyard, or around the block. Most importantly, participants are honouring one of our country’s most remarkable individuals by fundraising for cancer research.

Newfoundland and Labrador left an indelible mark on Terry Fox and his $1 million goal. It was on his visit to Port aux Basques in 1980, where he raised $10,000 – one dollar from each resident of the town – that changed his objective. From that moment, his new goal was to raise one dollar from each Canadian. Ten months later after the Marathon of Hope began, over $24 million was raised for cancer research.

To date, the Terry Fox Foundation has collected over $850 million worldwide and in 2020, the Marathon of Hope celebrated its 40th anniversary.

In 2016, the Provincial Government declared the second Sunday after Labour Day ‘Terry Fox Day’ in the province. To learn more about Terry Fox Day, please visit the Terry Fox Foundation.

“Terry Fox Run Day is an excellent opportunity for residents to get active for an incredible purpose. Terry Fox wanted to create a change, and with that change he has created a legacy that has helped fund cancer research for 41 years. On September 19, I encourage individuals of all ages and abilities to take the opportunity to participate in any way you can as we pay tribute to a hero.”
